Biography

I love a good story. Story gives us context. Stories pull us into an experience, time and space, and we become participants. Students need context and story. It expresses our humanity and makes us human. This is why I have chosen to be an English teacher. To connect with young people and be a positive influence in their lives.  Deep in the heart of every person is an inconsolable longing for meaning and connectedness.  Literature is a wonderful tool by which we can find meaning and connectedness. It is the romance of love and beauty in a story that melts and moves the heart. It is important that an education expose the students to good literature that will romance their hearts. This is why I love good literature, the opportunity to connect subjects relating to one another under a coherent scheme, connecting to humanity one story at a time.

During the twenty years I lived in the greater Las Vegas area I had the privilege of founding and directing American Heritage Academy (AHA).  Over a ten year period of time  AHA grew into a private school which served PreK-8thgrade students with an enrollment of 275 students. The Academy served some special-needs students, but the largest enrollment is accelerated students. AHA gave me the opportunity to work with about 27 full and part-time teachers. I am a people person and thoroughly enjoyed working with the students, parents and staff.

My long term goal is to teach English and writing classes for the middle school grades and finish a Masters program in Education at George Wythe college. I hope the love and enthusiasm I have for literature will be contagious. I also have an interest in writing young adult literature. My writing experience includes writing curriculum for AHA and the ‘Live and Learn’ section for Desert Saints Magazine for four years (2002-2006). My future plans are to write a chronological historical fiction series for young adults.
